JAMES GUNN AND DC STUDIOS "TOOK OVER" SUPERGIRL IN POST PRODUCTION AFTER LOW EARLY TEST SCORES AND "CREATIVE DIFFERENCES"

Jonathan EscuderoComment

Stop us if you've heard this one before. DC is hard at work on the second film in their universe when the Studio gets wind that test screenings are not working so they step in and get heavy handed.

Yeah.... It's happening again.

James Gunn and Craig Gillespie had creative differences over the direction of SUPERGIRL, The Hollywood Reporter states in a new report, and the film never found its footing in the post-production process.

Early audience test scores topped out at 70 out of 100, with most of Gillespie's cuts never leaving the 60s. An inside source told THR that Gillespie and James Gunn "were not creatively aligned".

DC Studios and Gillespie knew the film wasn't working as early as Fall 2025. By Winter 2025, DC Studios had taken over post production, recruiting writer Jeremy Slater, a Gunn confidant, to help in post production and reshoots.

It's not known the extent of Slater's work on the film. Original screenwriter Ana Nogueira did remain involved in the post-production process.

One main point of contention was the climactic final battle. Other issues with the movie are unclear, but it is known that music was a key friction point.

According to the report, DC Studios was making headway on their version of the cut when they decided to force a " bake off" between the Studio Cut and Director Craig Gillespie's cut, which was 11 minutes longer and featured more of KREM.

The Studio Cut tested a couple points higher and the Studio made the choice to go with their cut. The movie was not tested again.

This reporter thinks back to interview quotes where Craig Gillespie admitted to not reading the book he was tasked with adapting, rather going off of screenwriter Ana Nogueira's script.

Which wouldn't have been an issue except Ann recently expressed a HUGE misunderstanding of the source material as well.

In my opinion, not only were James Gunn and DC Studios right to take over the film, they actually took WAY too long and let this get too far into the production before stepping in.
