Kenny Omega Gives His Thoughts on the "Triple H Era" of WWE

Nicholas LaroccoComment

On a recent Twitch stream, Kenny Omega commented on the Paul “Triple H” Levesque era of WWE.

“Everyone seems to know just what he is booking and what he isn’t booking. Even as a wrestler who has kind of like an inside track, I don’t know what his ideas are. I don’t know what’s a result of just what comes from his brain and his brain alone, so I can’t comment to that.

What I do appreciate is that he’s open-minded to all the styles of the world of wrestling. I think I’m sure he probably prefers one over the other or some over others, but I like that he’s giving everything a shot.”

Kenny Omega also discussed his health, plans for surgery, and other considerations on a stream where he played Street Fighter 6 with Michael Nakazawa.

Smackdown opens with Cody Rhodes being invited out by Nick Aldis so he can find out who his opponent for the WWE Championship will be in Saudi Arabia

Champion vs Champion at King and Queen of the Ring. Cody Rhodes vs Logan Paul.

Paul brings up the fact that both he and Cody began their current WWE runs at WrestleMania 38. Paul says this was never Cody's story. It was Paul who put the rocket on WWE's back.

Says he bets a lot of people stand across from Logan Paul and call him a dumbass. But Cody won’t belittle his accomplishments in the ring. Cody wants the US title and Cody wants to become grand slam champion.

  • QUEEN OF THE RING ROUND 1: NIA JAX DEF. NAOMI

This match had a lot more time to develop into something than you would usually see on SmackDown. Very good stuff.

  • KING OF THE RING ROUND 1: CARMELO HAYES DEF. BARON CORBIN

A lot better showing for Melo than his match with Cody. Baron Corbin wasn’t so bad here either.

  • QUEEN OF THE RING ROUND 1: JADE CARGILL DEF. PIPER NIVEN

Piper Niven got a lot of offense in on Jade before Jade finally turns it around and wins. Cute moment between Jade and Bianca and they pass each other on our way to the next match.

Little more than a squash match.

Solo Sikoa confronts Paul Heyman about Heyman pulling Roman from the draft and causing the Bloodline to get drafted at Round 3 instead of 1.

Solo says he understands that Paul is the Wiseman and he’s just trying to help.

But Solo saw the look Paul was giving to Jey last week. Was he asking for help or something? Has he really not spoken to Roman since Mania?

Well Solo says he’s spoken to Roman. Roman supposedly told Solo is in charge until he returns. Solo pulls Paul in for a hug and says he loves him.

  • KING OF THE RING ROUND 1: TAMA TONGA DEF. ANGELO DAWKINS

Pretty quick match that ends when the Bloodline overwhelms the Street Profits.

  • KING OF THE RING ROUND 1: RANDY ORTON DEF. AJ STYLES

Another strong match from AJ Styles and Randy Orton. The show closes with Orton moving on to the next round of the KotR.

Update on Sammy Guevara's AEW Status

Nicholas LaroccoComment

Following his encounter with Jeff Hardy on the February 16th, 2024 edition of AEW Rampage, Sammy Guevara was reportedly suspended from AEW. However, according to a recent update from Dave Meltzer, Guevara's suspension has been lifted. Despite this, there is no clear indication of when he will return to AEW, with Meltzer mentioning that while there have been ideas proposed, nothing has been finalized.

Guevara, a former three-time TNT Champion, found himself suspended for the second time in his AEW career. The first instance dates back to 2020 when controversial remarks he made about Mercedes Mone came to light from a 2016 podcast.

His most recent suspension stemmed from an incident during his match with Jeff Hardy, where Guevara inadvertently caused a broken nose to Hardy with a knee to the head. Despite the injury, the match continued, with Guevara executing his finisher and securing the victory. It was reported that this deviated from AEW's concussion protocol, as Guevara was instructed to pin Hardy following the injury, which he did not adhere to.

Despite the lack of specific commentary from Guevara regarding his suspension, he expressed gratitude to his fans in a text-only message at the conclusion of a recent vlog.

PAC is a bit out of it when he’s approached by Bullet Club Gold. They make fun of him and Death Triangle before they leave.

The EVPs continue hijacking the show with a promotional video about themselves. They say they need more of this and less announcements from Kenny Omega. They will address that in the ring tonight.

They both give Swerve Strickland a disgusted “good luck” as Swerve makes his way out to the ring to face off with Christian

Swerve calls out Christian. Christian and his children are going to jump Swerve again before the Mogul Embassy comes out to back up Swerve.

But they turn on him and put him through a table. Christian leaves the stage and backstage it’s revealed this was all orchestrated by the Young Bucks.

Its 7:05pm PST and The Elite say the show only ends when they say it ends. They say they had to take out Tony Khan because he didn’t get out of his own way. They say Kenny Omega ended 15 years of friendship by making his decision last week. But they accept the Anarchy in the Arena

FTR has found their two partners in Team AEW!!!! BRYAN DANIELSON AND EDDIE KINGSTON!!!! They all go down to the ring and Matt Jackson screams at them not to lay a finger. Which of course leads to a brawl that closes the show.

CM Punk says he’s going to hold up the show until Drew McIntyre returns. He asks Pat McAfee to tweet Drew to come back. Then Punk cuts a promo saying he watched Drew talk all this crap while he was gone and he wants his revenge no matter what. He says does Drew hate Punk or does Drew hate himself?

  • KING OF THE RING ROUND 1: ILJA DRAGUNOV DEF. RICOCHET

  • QUEEN OF THE RING ROUND 1: ZOEY STARKS DEF. IVY NILE

It was really hard to follow Ricochet and Dragunov here but they worked really hard.

Bron Breakker is pissed he isnt in the King of the Ring Tournament. Adam Pearce says there is a reason for that and they go into his office.

Becky Lynch is out for an interview where Michael Cole talks to her about the women’s division on RAW after the Draft. A couple more minutes of this and the crowd would’ve turned.

Liv Morgan finally interrupts and asks Becky for the match she was promised. Becky agrees.

Liv Morgan vs Becky Lynch for the WWE Women's World Championship is set for the King and Queen of the Ring PLE.

Damage CTRL comes out to complain about Liv Morgan getting a title shot. They go to jump Becky and Liv. Becky thinks they’re going to team up. Liv abandons her. Lyra Valkyria comes out for the save.

  • WWE QUEEN OF THE RING ROUND 1: LYRA VALKYRIA DEF. DAKOTA KAI

Great match. Great showcase for Lyra.

  • KING OF THE RING ROUND 1: GUNTHER DEF. SHEAMUS

An absolute war. These two men brutalized each other. I only wish the commercial breaks weren’t so long. It feels like we’re missing a significant chuck of an excellent match.

Avenged Sevenfold Reveals Lost WWE Collaboration for Mr Kennedy Theme

Jonathan EscuderoComment

In the annals of WWE history, there are often tales of collaborations between wrestlers and musicians that never see the light of day. One such intriguing story revolves around Ken Anderson, better known to wrestling fans as Mr. Kennedy, and the renowned rock band Avenged Sevenfold. The partnership was aimed at crafting a unique entrance theme for Anderson, but sadly, it remains a lost treasure in the world of sports entertainment.

During his time in WWE from 2005 to 2009, Mr. Kennedy became known for his charismatic persona and memorable ring entrances. However, what many fans may not know is that he was also a fan of the band Avenged Sevenfold. This shared admiration led to discussions between Anderson and the members of the band about creating a custom entrance theme.

In a recent interview with Jesea Lee, Avenged Sevenfold bassist Johnny Christ shed some light on this forgotten collaboration.

"Back in, I want to say 2007-ish, 2006-ish, Ken Kennedy.. evidently he was a fan and reached out, or someone there was a fan – don't quote me on this, this is 20 years ago almost now and I don't know exactly how it came to us – but we recorded and wrote an original piece for him to come out to," said Christ as transcribed by Metal Injection. "It definitely had the 'KEN! KENNEDY!' in it and everything.

Christ recounted a chance encounter with John Hammer, a member of WWE's music department, during WrestleMania. It was during this encounter that Hammer mentioned possibly still having the recording, sparking nostalgia for Christ and Avenged Sevenfold guitarist M. Shadows.

"It's funny because last year I went to WrestleMania when it was here at Sofi, I ran into John Hammer who works with the music department of WWE, he's a fan. Me and [Avenged Sevenfold guitarist M. Shadows] were there together with our kids, and he came over to our suite. We were talking and he remembered that and he was like 'You know what? I think I still have it,' and me and Matt were like 'oh my God I haven't heard it in years!' None of us could find it anymore, like where where it was, and we listened back to it on his phone ear to ear.”

Despite the excitement surrounding the project, the collaboration faced obstacles behind the scenes. Issues arose between Warner Music, Avenged Sevenfold's record label at the time, and WWE regarding the rights and contracts associated with the song. Despite efforts to resolve these issues, a satisfactory agreement could not be reached, ultimately leading to the shelving of the project.

“But yeah, that rumor is absolutely true. I wish we could find the originals of it. Unfortunately, it was a thing between Warner Music and WWE [where they] couldn't come to an agreement on the contract or the rights to the song at the time, for whatever reason. The people who were there at the time aren't even working for Warner anymore and probably not many of them in WWE are working there anymore that had those negotiations, but unfortunately it never came through.

I don't know what the legality is of us being able to ever show that song or anything like that at this point. But yeah, it's true. We went in and recorded it, I think we were in the middle of a tour, and we went into a studio and recorded that. I was really bummed when it didn't come out too because it was a good tune, it was a good intro tune. I don't know if it was an album song, but definitely for a one-off and to be a part of Ken Kennedy's entrance, that would have been really cool."

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Christ expressed disappointment that the unique entrance theme never saw the light of day. He lamented the fact that what could have been a memorable addition to Mr. Kennedy's persona and WWE's music library remains confined to the vaults of history.

While the song may never be heard by the masses, its existence sparks intrigue and curiosity among wrestling and music enthusiasts alike, leaving behind a legacy of what could have been.

WWE Backlash Results 05-04-2024

Jonathan EscuderoComment

WWE Backlash kicks off with a HOT start. This crowd, this atmosphere. The Bloodline/KO and Orton are going to open the show but they can’t stop brawling before the bell starts.

Nick Aldis comes out and says since they can’t follow the rules…. This is not a No DQ match!!!

  • NO DQ: THE BLOODLINE DEF. KEVIN OWENS AND RANDY ORTON

Awesome opening match with a lot of heat and great energy. The match ends when TONGA LOA DEBUTS AND JOINS THE BLOODLINE!!!!

  • WWE WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP: BAYLEY(c) DEF. NAOMI vs TIFFANY STRATTON

Excellent match. 5-10 more minutes and we could’ve seen an all time classic. Excellent finish that saw Tiffy miss a PME on Naomi and Bayley before they hit her with the 3D!! Bayley wins after a flash pin.

The new Bloodline walks passed Jey Uso and stare him down. Heyman looks to Jey as of he desperately needs help. But he walks away.

  • WWE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP: DAMIEN PRIEST DEF. JEY USO

Really good match that gets elevated by this excellent crowd. Multiple times where it appeared Jey Uso could actually win the title. Judgement Day continues to fall apart as Finn Balor and JD McDonough get involved without Priest permission and he was NOT happy with them.

  • WWE WOMEN’S TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS: JADE CARGILL AND BIANCA BELAIR DEF. DAMAGE CTRL(c)

There were some interesting spots but the match fell apart a little more than halfway through and never came back together. SICK transition into the Jaded at the end from Jade and Kairi.

The first round matches for the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments have been revealed. Holy shit.

Round 1 2024 Queen of the Ring tournament:

Ivy Nile v Zoey Stark

Shayna Baszler v Zelina Vega

Lyra Valkyria v Asuka

IYO SKY v Natalya

Round 1 2024 King of the Ring Tournament:

Finn Bálor v Drew McIntyre

Gunther v Sheamus

Ilja Dragunov v Ricochet

Kofi Kingston v Rey Mysterio

  • WWE Championship: CODY RHODES(c) DEF AJ STYLES

It’s honestly hard to judge this match on objective quality because the crowd was absolutely on fire. Everything they did in this match, and really on this entire show, was amplified by 10. Just an all around unique experience as a home viewer.

At one point AJ Styles hits Cody with a Burning Hammer and Cody kicks out at 1… I did not like that.

Otherwise, the match delivered beyond expectations.

Gable Steveson Released from WWE

Jonathan Escudero1 Comment

The Wrestling Observer has reported that Olympic Gold Medalist Gable Steveson has been released from WWE.

Steveson, known for his remarkable achievements in amateur wrestling, including claiming the 2020 Summer Olympic gold medal and being a three-time age-group world champion, made headlines when he transitioned to the world of professional wrestling. However, despite his stellar track record in freestyle wrestling, Steveson's success did not seamlessly transfer to the realm of sports entertainment.

Steveson's failure to acclimate to the WWE environment serves as a reminder of the challenges athletes face when transitioning between sports. The world of professional wrestling demands a unique blend of athleticism, showmanship, and storytelling, qualities that do not always align with those required in amateur wrestling.

The new series will premiere exclusively on VICE TV on June 4 at 10:00pm.

Featuring exclusive, in-depth interviews with wrestlers, executives, and insiders, the series will shed light never seen before on the personal stories and struggles of those who lived through the rise and fall of WCW.

VICE TV is available on all major cable and satellite providers and the VICE TV app.

AEW Dynamite Results 05-01-2024

Jonathan EscuderoComment

AEW Dynamite kicks off with Tony Khan saying he’s going to run the show from Jacksonville. But the Young Bucks cut off his “live satellite feed” and take over the show.

They say they have iron clad contracts and can not be fired. They play a new opening for Dynamite that only includes members of the Elite.

Swerve comes out and says what the Elite have done is a “bitch move”. They’re power hungry, throwing their weight around and he doesn’t like it.

But he says he has more important business to deal with. He doesn’t know who his opponent is for Double or Nothing. The Bucks appear on screen, they fine Swerve for cursing at them and they send out Swerve's opponent for DoN.

ITS CHRISTIAN!!!!!

Christian attacks Swerve immediately. Swerve fights back but the numbers are too much.

Christian says he never forgot how Swerve made them both lose at the biggest show in AEW history, All In: London. And Christian never forgot how Swerve broke into his son Nick Wayne's house and brutalized him.

Then Luchasaurus/Killswitch rips out one of Swerve's dreads and they leave him lying.

  • AEW TNT CHAMPIONSHIP OPEN CHALLENGE: ADAM COPELAND(c) DEF. BUDDY MATTHEWS

There were two seperate moments where it looked like a wrestler might’ve gotten hurt. One was Adam Copeland selling his bicep and the other saw Buddy Murphy spitting up blood after a crossbody.

But the match continued and both men seemed OK in the end. 20 minutes long and the crowd wasn’t with them for most of it.

Copeland is going to give Buddy Matthews a Con-Chair-To when Malakai Black appears to further influence this darkness in Copeland. He tells Copeland to DO IT. But he disappears when Copeland turns the chair towards him.

  • SAMOA JOE DEF. ISAIAH CASSIDY

A pretty funny squash match. Isiah Cassidy has 69 AEW Wins as of today. Nice.

Orange Cassidy reveals Chuck Taylor's career is over, thanks to Trent Baretta's attack. Orange Cassidy is gonna call it Baretta but Trent is already out.

Big surprise, says Trent. That OC would make this about himself. Trent says it’s OC's fault that Chuck is retired.

OC is going to attack Trent but security stops it and then Don Callis comes out?!?!?!

Callis whispers into OC's ear and they both leave together!!!!

Jack Perry tells Renee that he meant what he said to Tony Khan. He wants the best for the future of AEW and that’s why he took out TK.

Now the new era of AEW can grow under the Elite.

  • FTW CHAMPIONSHIP: CHRIS JERICHO(c) DEF. KATSUYURI SHIBATA

Midway through the match, Jericho and Shibata completely abandoned the street fight here. They chop each other to death for about 4 minutes before Jericho throws a hockey puck at Shibata and get back to weapons.

The match ends when Big Bill tales out Shibata to prove himself to Jericho and possibly sit…. Under the Learning Tree.

  • CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI DEF. BRIAN CAGE

They beat each other up. As advertised. As expected. Great match in front of a sleepy crowd.

  • SERENA DEEB DEF. MARIAH MAY

Mariah May and Serena Deeb probably had my favorite match of the night. Super technical and even funny at some points.

Would love to see them on PPV together with some more time.

Deeb vs Toni Storm for the Women’s Championship is official for Double or Nothing!!!

Kenny Omega explains why he’s been gone. He was told that he would have to get a surgery for Diverticulitis which might leave him unable to wrestle.

Kenny said he asked the doctor what if he doesn’t have the surgery. The doctor tells him that he’ll have a ticking timebomb in his stomach for the rest of his life and he may end up needing the surgery anyway if he ever gets hit in the stomach.

Kenny considered retirement.

Kenny couldn’t watch AEW because he was so affected by this news. But he watched Bryan Danielson and Will Ospreay then he realized he needed to be back in the ring.

Kenny realized he NEEDS to come back. He made it a mission to CHANGE THE WORLD and that’s what he’s going to do.

Kenny says he is fired from the Elite. But he is an EVP as well so a part of power in AEW belongs to THE BEST BOUT MACHINE

Kenny Omega: "GIVE ME A COUPLE OF MONTHS AND WE CAN SETTLE THIS IN AN AEW RING."

Okada: "IM SORRY KENNY. IM THE BEST BOUT MACHINE NOW"

Kenny Omega is confronted by Okada then jumped by Jack Perry. Kenny fights back but it's not enough.

JACK PERRY ATTACKS THE STOMACH OF KENNY OMEGA WITH A CHAIR!!!

EVP TRIGGER!!!!! The Young Bucks take out Kenny Omega. FTR comes out for the save but it’s way too late. The show ends with Kenny being stretchered out and the Elite standing tall.

Cody Rhodes: I Could Never Root Against AEW

Jonathan EscuderoComment

Cody Rhodes, despite his current position as WWE's top champion, maintains an unwavering support for AEW, citing his integral role in its inception and his broader concern for the wrestling industry.

In a recent interview on the Cheap Heat podcast, Rhodes addressed lingering questions about his allegiance, asserting, "AEW does not happen without me." Reflecting on his departure from the company and the misconceptions surrounding it, Rhodes emphasized his continued investment in AEW's success, likening it to familial ties.

"These questions, I always now -- I'm very careful about because they're the number one question that will be cited when this interview hits. I'll say: the narrative changed a lot about my contributions to AEW, and that was very disappointing. There were some people, I'm not going to say their names, they know who they were, who kind of tried to put some propaganda out when I left. There's a quote in The Young Bucks' book about how I was last to the signing. And me and Matt & Nick [Jackson] are as close as ever, so glad that I've had them in my career and my life. But if we are being honest, AEW does not happen without me. It doesn't. And with that in mind, I could never root against it. It's like having a kid and they go off to college and they get a DUI or they get in trouble... I'll always have that in my heart for them.

It certainly was a wound that was more gaping and painful than people realize, because now they look at the situation and they're like, 'Oh man, you're on top of the world, you have everything.' Maybe they don't understand that I really gave everything I could. I did. And, yeah, I could never see a day where I was rooting against them."

Rhodes also underscored the significance of AEW's stability for the broader wrestling ecosystem, expressing apprehension about the potential fallout if the promotion were to shutter.

"And then from a completely outside of me perspective, my relationship to AEW or anything, my friends, the kids I signed, the people from my school, all that stuff. But from outside of that, it's very important that they hang in there. Because if that was to go away, I don't think anybody in the locker room has any clue the financial repercussions that that would have on the wrestling business. The trickle-down effect it would then have on independent wrestling. We've created a really comfortable environment in sports entertainment for men and women to feed their families and to do well and to be treated on the level that their global penetration ask for. And I would hate to see that bubble burst. So that's another random fear I have of, you know, when they're down or if they're up or whatever it may be. But, yeah, I would never root against them -- in any case. That's not always easy because random things said about you at press conferences, and that's a big no-no, you should never say me or my wife's name, Tony should have told you that. So, yeah, I'll never root against them. I really won't.”

GUNTHER: “The [WWE] Product Before Triple H Was Not What I Enjoyed. I Just Didn't Want To Be Part of That."

Jonathan EscuderoComment

In an interview with Gorilla Position, Gunther talks about his feelings toward the WWE product under Vince McMahon. Gunther says that the era in WWE before Triple H’s was one of the reasons why he didn’t want to move to the U.S. Gunther did not enjoy the product nor wanted to be part of it.

“The (WWE) product before Triple H was not what I enjoyed. I just didn't want to be part of that.

I am who I am and that's what I can do best. A big part of that is I need to have my time in the ring and have that time to put on the matches I can put on. That chance would not be there under the old regime.

With Triple H, he always saw that in me, and he always had that vision for me. I got lucky that a lot of things in my career took place at the right time.”

Gunther recently came off of the longest Intercontinental Championship reign of all time and now had his eyes set on the King of the Ring and an eventual World Championship run.
