I actually struggled to put together a review for Supergirl.
To get this out of the way, yes. Ultimately, I really enjoyed this movie. Not nearly the Guardians of the Galaxy-esque needle dropper I thought it would be.
At some points more compelling and even darker than I ever imagined. But there were a few superhero movie tropes that I thought we had left behind which made their way back in with this film.
I also made the mistake of reading the book RIGHT BEFORE the film, so I spent the entire time wondering "why didn't they use this scene" or "wonder why they changed that detail".
But I feel like maybe these are personal issues and not something thats objectively wrong with the movie. It's not NEARLY as offensive to me as something like Thor: Ragnarok. (A technically great movie that I personally hated because of my attachment to Greg Pak's Planet Hulk)
Ommisions and small changes aside, it still hits every important narrative mark the book does and in the end, the essence of the source material retained its integrity. That's all we can really ask for, as comic fans.
Judging the movie on its own merits. This was a really good film. If we HAVE to compare it to Superman, I think some people will actually enjoy this even MORE. Coming in at a snappy 1 hour and 48 minutes, there's really no time for a dull moment.
Milly Alcock shines as this "messy" and "rude" but kind version of Supergirl. She serves as a great contrast to David Corenswet's performance as Clark in Superman.
Jason Mamoa's Lobo doesn't overstay his welcome. Every time he's on screen is a treat. Eve Ridley is going to be a star.
But I need to talk about Krem. At first glance, I saw his design in this film and I hated everything about it. But Matthias Schoenaerts brought a charisma to his performance that won me over. (I still hate this design)
Speaking of designs tho. There were SO MANY ALIENS!! I love it!!
Finally, I know some early reviewers were really taken by the "Mad Max" vibe of the film but I mourn the lost vibrancy of the original story.
Verdict: Good movie!
Worth the theater trip? Yes!
