It Took 40 Years to Get a New Red Sonja Movie… and You Have One Night to See It in Theaters

George SerranoComment

It Took Four Decades for Red Sonja to Ride Again

It has been forty years since Red Sonja last swung her sword on the big screen. The 1985 original starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger was not a box office hit but earned a cult following over time. Since then, Hollywood has repeatedly tried to bring the She-Devil With a Sword back. Robert Rodriguez, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway all attempted versions that never made it to production.

From Development Hell to the Big Screen

The 2025 reboot finally happened thanks to director M. J. Bassett and writer Tasha Huo (Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft). Bassett’s take avoids outdated fantasy clichés and presents a more grounded, emotional Red Sonja. She is still fierce and fearless but carries a sense of vulnerability that makes her more layered and relatable.

Matilda Lutz Brings a New Edge to the She-Devil With a Sword

Matilda Lutz (Revenge) steps into the role of Sonja, leading a cast that includes Robert Sheehan as power-hungry Emperor Dragan and Wallis Day as the dangerous Dark Annisia. Filming took place mostly at Nu Boyana Studios in Bulgaria, with scenes also shot in Greece. The budget is modest, but Bassett uses practical sets, stunt work, and grounded fight scenes to create a living, tactile fantasy world.

The Critics Are Split on the New Red Sonja

Reviews vary widely. DiscussingFilm called it a “larger-than-life, bloody, and beautifully earnest reintroduction” of the character. AIPT Comics described it as “confident, funny, and badass,” while Deep Focus Review enjoyed its B-movie charm but wished it went further. On the harsher side, The Guardian labeled it a “soggy, CGI-infused, low-budget confection” and JoBlo called it “underwhelmingly formulaic.”

One Night Only: The Strange Release Plan for Red Sonja 2025

If you want to see Red Sonja on the big screen, you have only one chance. After premiering in Russia on July 31, the U.S. release is a single-night theatrical event on August 13, 2025. Two weeks later, it will be available on digital and VOD on August 29. This strategy is becoming common for smaller genre films, reducing marketing costs while directing most of the audience to streaming, where the studio keeps a larger share of profits.

Why This Might Be Your Only Chance to See Her in Cinematic Glory

It is a strange ending to such a long wait. Red Sonja was born from pulp storytelling and made iconic through comic book splash pages, a character built for spectacle. After forty years of anticipation, her return to theaters will last just one night before she moves to streaming. Fans who want to see the She-Devil With a Sword in full cinematic form will want to mark August 13 on their calendar. It’s gonna be a bloody night.
