WWE Backlash Results 05-04-2024

Jonathan EscuderoComment

WWE Backlash kicks off with a HOT start. This crowd, this atmosphere. The Bloodline/KO and Orton are going to open the show but they can’t stop brawling before the bell starts.

Nick Aldis comes out and says since they can’t follow the rules…. This is not a No DQ match!!!

  • NO DQ: THE BLOODLINE DEF. KEVIN OWENS AND RANDY ORTON

Awesome opening match with a lot of heat and great energy. The match ends when TONGA LOA DEBUTS AND JOINS THE BLOODLINE!!!!

  • WWE WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP: BAYLEY(c) DEF. NAOMI vs TIFFANY STRATTON

Excellent match. 5-10 more minutes and we could’ve seen an all time classic. Excellent finish that saw Tiffy miss a PME on Naomi and Bayley before they hit her with the 3D!! Bayley wins after a flash pin.

The new Bloodline walks passed Jey Uso and stare him down. Heyman looks to Jey as of he desperately needs help. But he walks away.

  • WWE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP: DAMIEN PRIEST DEF. JEY USO

Really good match that gets elevated by this excellent crowd. Multiple times where it appeared Jey Uso could actually win the title. Judgement Day continues to fall apart as Finn Balor and JD McDonough get involved without Priest permission and he was NOT happy with them.

  • WWE WOMEN’S TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS: JADE CARGILL AND BIANCA BELAIR DEF. DAMAGE CTRL(c)

There were some interesting spots but the match fell apart a little more than halfway through and never came back together. SICK transition into the Jaded at the end from Jade and Kairi.

The first round matches for the King and Queen of the Ring tournaments have been revealed. Holy shit.

Round 1 2024 Queen of the Ring tournament:

Ivy Nile v Zoey Stark

Shayna Baszler v Zelina Vega

Lyra Valkyria v Asuka

IYO SKY v Natalya

Round 1 2024 King of the Ring Tournament:

Finn Bálor v Drew McIntyre

Gunther v Sheamus

Ilja Dragunov v Ricochet

Kofi Kingston v Rey Mysterio

  • WWE Championship: CODY RHODES(c) DEF AJ STYLES

It’s honestly hard to judge this match on objective quality because the crowd was absolutely on fire. Everything they did in this match, and really on this entire show, was amplified by 10. Just an all around unique experience as a home viewer.

At one point AJ Styles hits Cody with a Burning Hammer and Cody kicks out at 1… I did not like that.

Otherwise, the match delivered beyond expectations.

Gable Steveson Released from WWE

Jonathan Escudero1 Comment

The Wrestling Observer has reported that Olympic Gold Medalist Gable Steveson has been released from WWE.

Steveson, known for his remarkable achievements in amateur wrestling, including claiming the 2020 Summer Olympic gold medal and being a three-time age-group world champion, made headlines when he transitioned to the world of professional wrestling. However, despite his stellar track record in freestyle wrestling, Steveson's success did not seamlessly transfer to the realm of sports entertainment.

Steveson's failure to acclimate to the WWE environment serves as a reminder of the challenges athletes face when transitioning between sports. The world of professional wrestling demands a unique blend of athleticism, showmanship, and storytelling, qualities that do not always align with those required in amateur wrestling.

Nicholas LaroccoComment

Vice TV has issued the following press release for the upcoming “Who Killed WCW” docuseries:

VICE TV ANNOUNCES NEW UNSCRIPTED SERIES IN COLLABORATION WITH DWAYNE ‘THE ROCK’ JOHNSON AND DANY GARCIA OF SEVEN BUCKS PRODUCTIONS FOR NEW UNSCRIPTED SERIES “WHO KILLED WCW?”

Premieres Exclusively on VICE TV June 4 at 10:00pm.

New York, NY – April 30, 2024 – VICE TV today announced its second collaboration with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Dany Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions. Who Killed WCW, a groundbreaking docuseries, dives deep into the history, rise, and ultimate demise of World Championship Wrestling (WCW), one of the most influential promotions in the history of wrestling. The new series will premiere exclusively on VICE TV on June 4 at 10:00pm.

“The iconic rise and fall of WCW (World Championship Wrestling) is one of professional wrestling’s most captivating stories – full of big dreams, massive successes, painful failures, and the harsh realities of the pro wrestling business. With wrestling viewership and fan engagement at an ultimate high, there has never been a more perfect time to tell top-quality wrestling stories, and there’s no better one to start with than a one-of-a-kind, behind-the-scenes look at this epic saga, known as The Rise and Fall of WCW and personally, the rise of WCW (not the fall) inspired me greatly early in my career where I would eventually become, the Final Boss,” said Dwayne Johnson, Co-Founder of Seven Bucks.

“Diving into the saga of WCW is not just another project for us; it is an opportunity to highlight our talents as documentary storytellers in a world where we have historical credibility and knowledge: professional wrestling. This project allows us to build a bridge between the passionate global wrestling audience and those curious about an often-misunderstood industry, strengthened by our partnership with a dedicated storyteller in VICE TV,” said Dany Garcia, Co-Founder of Seven Bucks.

Peter Gaffney Interim President of VICE TV said, “VICE TV has always been at the forefront of telling stories from which others shy away. We’re lucky to join forces again with Dwayne and Dany of Seven Bucks. We have unparalleled access to one of the great stories of modern professional wrestling, and we can’t wait for our audience to see it come to life.”

Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Brian Gewirtz will executive produce from Seven Bucks alongside VICE TV’s Lee Hoffman, Evan Husney, and Jason Eisener with whom they previously collaborated on VICE’s acclaimed wrestling docuseries Tales from the Territories, featuring wrestling legends sharing stories from when the sport was divided into regional territories. Danny Gabai, Guillermo Garcia, and Paul Taylor executive produce for VICE Studios Canada. Who Killed WCW? is produced by VICE Studios Canada in association with Bell Media’s Crave.

Who Killed WCW? promises to explore the complex factors that led to the promotion’s downfall, including management challenges, creative decisions, and the intense competition during the infamous Monday Night Wars. Featuring exclusive, in-depth interviews with wrestlers, executives, and insiders, the series will shed light never seen before on the personal stories and struggles of those who lived through the rise and fall of WCW.

VICE TV is available on all major cable and satellite providers and the VICE TV app.

AEW Dynamite Results 05-01-2024

Jonathan EscuderoComment

AEW Dynamite kicks off with Tony Khan saying he’s going to run the show from Jacksonville. But the Young Bucks cut off his “live satellite feed” and take over the show.

They say they have iron clad contracts and can not be fired. They play a new opening for Dynamite that only includes members of the Elite.

Swerve comes out and says what the Elite have done is a “bitch move”. They’re power hungry, throwing their weight around and he doesn’t like it.

But he says he has more important business to deal with. He doesn’t know who his opponent is for Double or Nothing. The Bucks appear on screen, they fine Swerve for cursing at them and they send out Swerve's opponent for DoN.

ITS CHRISTIAN!!!!!

Christian attacks Swerve immediately. Swerve fights back but the numbers are too much.

Christian says he never forgot how Swerve made them both lose at the biggest show in AEW history, All In: London. And Christian never forgot how Swerve broke into his son Nick Wayne's house and brutalized him.

Then Luchasaurus/Killswitch rips out one of Swerve's dreads and they leave him lying.

  • AEW TNT CHAMPIONSHIP OPEN CHALLENGE: ADAM COPELAND(c) DEF. BUDDY MATTHEWS

There were two seperate moments where it looked like a wrestler might’ve gotten hurt. One was Adam Copeland selling his bicep and the other saw Buddy Murphy spitting up blood after a crossbody.

But the match continued and both men seemed OK in the end. 20 minutes long and the crowd wasn’t with them for most of it.

Copeland is going to give Buddy Matthews a Con-Chair-To when Malakai Black appears to further influence this darkness in Copeland. He tells Copeland to DO IT. But he disappears when Copeland turns the chair towards him.

  • SAMOA JOE DEF. ISAIAH CASSIDY

A pretty funny squash match. Isiah Cassidy has 69 AEW Wins as of today. Nice.

Orange Cassidy reveals Chuck Taylor's career is over, thanks to Trent Baretta's attack. Orange Cassidy is gonna call it Baretta but Trent is already out.

Big surprise, says Trent. That OC would make this about himself. Trent says it’s OC's fault that Chuck is retired.

OC is going to attack Trent but security stops it and then Don Callis comes out?!?!?!

Callis whispers into OC's ear and they both leave together!!!!

Jack Perry tells Renee that he meant what he said to Tony Khan. He wants the best for the future of AEW and that’s why he took out TK.

Now the new era of AEW can grow under the Elite.

  • FTW CHAMPIONSHIP: CHRIS JERICHO(c) DEF. KATSUYURI SHIBATA

Midway through the match, Jericho and Shibata completely abandoned the street fight here. They chop each other to death for about 4 minutes before Jericho throws a hockey puck at Shibata and get back to weapons.

The match ends when Big Bill tales out Shibata to prove himself to Jericho and possibly sit…. Under the Learning Tree.

  • CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI DEF. BRIAN CAGE

They beat each other up. As advertised. As expected. Great match in front of a sleepy crowd.

  • SERENA DEEB DEF. MARIAH MAY

Mariah May and Serena Deeb probably had my favorite match of the night. Super technical and even funny at some points.

Would love to see them on PPV together with some more time.

Deeb vs Toni Storm for the Women’s Championship is official for Double or Nothing!!!

Kenny Omega explains why he’s been gone. He was told that he would have to get a surgery for Diverticulitis which might leave him unable to wrestle.

Kenny said he asked the doctor what if he doesn’t have the surgery. The doctor tells him that he’ll have a ticking timebomb in his stomach for the rest of his life and he may end up needing the surgery anyway if he ever gets hit in the stomach.

Kenny considered retirement.

Kenny couldn’t watch AEW because he was so affected by this news. But he watched Bryan Danielson and Will Ospreay then he realized he needed to be back in the ring.

Kenny realized he NEEDS to come back. He made it a mission to CHANGE THE WORLD and that’s what he’s going to do.

Kenny says he is fired from the Elite. But he is an EVP as well so a part of power in AEW belongs to THE BEST BOUT MACHINE

Kenny Omega: "GIVE ME A COUPLE OF MONTHS AND WE CAN SETTLE THIS IN AN AEW RING."

Okada: "IM SORRY KENNY. IM THE BEST BOUT MACHINE NOW"

Kenny Omega is confronted by Okada then jumped by Jack Perry. Kenny fights back but it's not enough.

JACK PERRY ATTACKS THE STOMACH OF KENNY OMEGA WITH A CHAIR!!!

EVP TRIGGER!!!!! The Young Bucks take out Kenny Omega. FTR comes out for the save but it’s way too late. The show ends with Kenny being stretchered out and the Elite standing tall.

Cody Rhodes: I Could Never Root Against AEW

Jonathan EscuderoComment

Cody Rhodes, despite his current position as WWE's top champion, maintains an unwavering support for AEW, citing his integral role in its inception and his broader concern for the wrestling industry.

In a recent interview on the Cheap Heat podcast, Rhodes addressed lingering questions about his allegiance, asserting, "AEW does not happen without me." Reflecting on his departure from the company and the misconceptions surrounding it, Rhodes emphasized his continued investment in AEW's success, likening it to familial ties.

"These questions, I always now -- I'm very careful about because they're the number one question that will be cited when this interview hits. I'll say: the narrative changed a lot about my contributions to AEW, and that was very disappointing. There were some people, I'm not going to say their names, they know who they were, who kind of tried to put some propaganda out when I left. There's a quote in The Young Bucks' book about how I was last to the signing. And me and Matt & Nick [Jackson] are as close as ever, so glad that I've had them in my career and my life. But if we are being honest, AEW does not happen without me. It doesn't. And with that in mind, I could never root against it. It's like having a kid and they go off to college and they get a DUI or they get in trouble... I'll always have that in my heart for them.

It certainly was a wound that was more gaping and painful than people realize, because now they look at the situation and they're like, 'Oh man, you're on top of the world, you have everything.' Maybe they don't understand that I really gave everything I could. I did. And, yeah, I could never see a day where I was rooting against them."

Rhodes also underscored the significance of AEW's stability for the broader wrestling ecosystem, expressing apprehension about the potential fallout if the promotion were to shutter.

"And then from a completely outside of me perspective, my relationship to AEW or anything, my friends, the kids I signed, the people from my school, all that stuff. But from outside of that, it's very important that they hang in there. Because if that was to go away, I don't think anybody in the locker room has any clue the financial repercussions that that would have on the wrestling business. The trickle-down effect it would then have on independent wrestling. We've created a really comfortable environment in sports entertainment for men and women to feed their families and to do well and to be treated on the level that their global penetration ask for. And I would hate to see that bubble burst. So that's another random fear I have of, you know, when they're down or if they're up or whatever it may be. But, yeah, I would never root against them -- in any case. That's not always easy because random things said about you at press conferences, and that's a big no-no, you should never say me or my wife's name, Tony should have told you that. So, yeah, I'll never root against them. I really won't.”

GUNTHER: “The [WWE] Product Before Triple H Was Not What I Enjoyed. I Just Didn't Want To Be Part of That."

Jonathan EscuderoComment

In an interview with Gorilla Position, Gunther talks about his feelings toward the WWE product under Vince McMahon. Gunther says that the era in WWE before Triple H’s was one of the reasons why he didn’t want to move to the U.S. Gunther did not enjoy the product nor wanted to be part of it.

“The (WWE) product before Triple H was not what I enjoyed. I just didn't want to be part of that.

I am who I am and that's what I can do best. A big part of that is I need to have my time in the ring and have that time to put on the matches I can put on. That chance would not be there under the old regime.

With Triple H, he always saw that in me, and he always had that vision for me. I got lucky that a lot of things in my career took place at the right time.”

Gunther recently came off of the longest Intercontinental Championship reign of all time and now had his eyes set on the King of the Ring and an eventual World Championship run.

MJF Undergoes Shoulder Surgery, Impact on Feud with Undisputed Kingdom

Jonathan EscuderoComment

In a recent development reported by WrestlePurists and Jason Solomon, sources close to the situation have confirmed that Maxwell Jacob Friedman, popularly known as MJF, has undergone surgery on his left shoulder.

This news comes as a significant blow to both MJF and the wrestling community, particularly amidst his anticipated return and ongoing storyline engagements.

Originally choosing to rehab instead of getting a surgery. MJF was eyeing a comeback in March. Reports suggest that prior to his surgery, MJF had a crucial meeting with Tony Khan, the CEO of All Elite Wrestling (AEW), in Boston to discuss creative plans. However, with the unexpected setback, these plans have inevitably been reshaped, impacting ongoing storylines and future matches.

The injury to MJF, coupled with the recent setback faced by Adam Cole, has sent ripples across the creative landscape, particularly affecting the much-anticipated feud between MJF and the Undisputed Kingdom. Max was reportedly keen on wrapping up the program, but the injuries have undoubtedly forced a reevaluation of the timeline and direction of this storyline.

As of now, there is no clear timetable for MJF's return to the ring.

Stay tuned to Dirt Sheet Radio for further updates on MJF's recovery and its impact on the evolving landscape of professional wrestling.

TONY KHAN: AEW is Like the Pepsi of Pro Wrestling. WWE is Like the Harvey Weinstein of Pro Wrestling.

Jonathan EscuderoComment

While speaking to NFL Network, Tony reflected on AEW's trajectory in the wrestling industry and shared Shad Khan's perspective on the matter.

He emphasized AEW's significant presence in the market, comparing it to the success of AFL prior to its merger. Tony likened AEW to the Pepsi of pro wrestling, highlighting its role as a formidable challenger to WWE, which he equated to the Harvey Weinstein of pro wrestling.

"AEW, we've been doing this for five years, we are the most successful sports start up since the AFL, pre-merger. There has not been a challenger brand that has gained as much market share as AEW in many many years. We are like the Pepsi of pro wrestling. We're up against an evil juggernaut. WWE is our competitor, that's who we're facing. AEW, like the Pepsi of pro wrestling. WWE is like the Harvey Weinstein of pro wrestling. I'm really proud of what we do down here," he said.

It's worth noting that Weinstein, a film producer, faced accusations of sexual abuse during the #MeToo movement and was convicted of rape, although the conviction was later overturned. Additionally, Vince McMahon and WWE were embroiled in a lawsuit filed by former employee Janel Grant, which included allegations of sexual abuse against McMahon.

Powerhouse Hobbs Injured

Jonathan EscuderoComment

Powerhouse Hobbs reportedly suffered a legitimate injury during the 04-24-24 episode of AEW Dynamite, in his IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match with Jon Moxley.

According to wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, who provided insights into the incident, the injury sustained by Powerhouse Hobbs was not part of a scripted storyline. Meltzer described the moment, stating, "If you watched the show last night, that was not a worked knee injury. He went for a high cross or something and smashed into the turnbuckles and injured his knee. He could barely walk, and he hopped his way back into the ring, hopped into like two spots, and got choked out. There was more they were going to do."

The severity of Powerhouse Hobbs' injury and the potential impact on his career remain uncertain at this time. Knee injuries, in particular, can be challenging for wrestlers, as they can require extensive rehabilitation and may result in prolonged absences from in-ring competition. For Powerhouse Hobbs, who has been gaining momentum in AEW with his impressive athleticism and powerhouse style, a significant injury could derail his ascent in the company and alter the trajectory of his career.

The PG Era of WWE Coming to an End?

Jonathan EscuderoComment

The Wrestling Observer is reporting The Rock's involvement during the build-up to WrestleMania XL and Paul Heyman's Hall of Fame speech are considered to be the end of the “PG-Era” in WWE.

The PG era, characterized by a more family-friendly and advertiser-friendly product, has been a defining feature of the company's programming for over a decade. During this period, WWE aimed to appeal to a broader audience, toning down some of the edgier elements that had been prevalent in previous eras.

However, recent developments have sparked discussions about whether WWE is poised to transition away from the PG era. One such development is the involvement of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the build-up to WrestleMania XL. As one of the most electrifying figures in sports entertainment history, The Rock's return to the ring always generates immense excitement among fans. His presence in the lead-up to WrestleMania XL saw a departure from the more sanitized approach of the PG era, returning to the more vulgar yet larger-than-life storytelling and characters that defined previous eras.

Additionally, Paul Heyman's Hall of Fame speech has been cited as another indication of a potential shift in WWE's creative direction. Heyman, at one point in his speech, tells any naysayers they can “SUCK MY F*CKING D*CK”

While these events have sparked speculation about the end of the PG era, it's essential to note that WWE has not made any official announcements regarding a shift in its programming approach.

The company's upcoming deal with Netflix has also been cited as a factor that could have influenced its new creative direction. As WWE explores new avenues for distribution and content creation, there is speculation that it may be more willing to take creative risks and cater to a more mature audience.

Ultimately, whether or not WWE is indeed nearing the end of the PG era remains to be seen. The Rock's involvement in WrestleMania XL and Paul Heyman's Hall of Fame speech may be indicative of a broader shift in the company's creative direction, but only time will tell how WWE chooses to evolve its product in the years to come.

As fans eagerly await the future of sports entertainment, one thing is certain: the landscape of WWE is always evolving, and the only constant is change.
