*Nightwing #141 SPOILERS ahead!*
After everything that's happened since the superhighway incident. Nightwing has a chance to finally answer for the sins that have been weighing on him.
TIME TO PAY THE PRICE
It's time to pay the piper for Nightwing. As he stares on from the crowd, he is fighting with himself. He knows that turning himself in is the right thing to do. But he'd be turning himself in and not allowing himself to stop the true monster that's out there. The witch of Bludhaven.
But before he's able to walk up he hears a man talking about how happy he is that Nightwing is finally taking matters into his own hands to take care of this city. While he reminisces on how Nightwing beat up the corrupt officer in issue #140, he exclaims that Nightwing's new grit is a side of Nightwing he's happy to see.
Nightwing groans as Manhunter arrives on behalf of the Justice League. Trying their best to stop him from turning himself in. He argues that its the right thing to do. But Manhunter says that while it's the moral thing to do, it's going to open up a brand new can of worms that all heroes aren't waiting for.
How will this affect Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman when politicians learn that they can strong arm their way to arresting heroes if they see them as breaking any sort of law.
Another story is overheard by himself and Manhunter. A woman this time whose father died. She felt like she had nothing to live for after that. Until Nightwing showed up unannounced and talked with her on a rooftop when she was trying to jump. His simple choice of talking to her truly saved her life. She promises that the Nightwing that saved her wouldn't be the same person to carelessly take lives in a crash on a highway and pin it on another being if it weren't true.
She still believes in him no matter what.
Nightwing still decides that he will turn himself in. But...the WITCH shows up? Totally normal looking and leaving Nightwing so confused.
Anita Lee is her name. And she claims to have a mental illness and addiction that caused all of this. This should have her arrested easily and placed in jail right? Nightwing should feel happy. But he isn't. Something is wrong.
And that something is discovered when he follows a man back to his apartment that was at the press conference. He is suspicious and Nightwing's gut was right. He knows everything. Including the most important piece of this puzzle.
That "Anita Lee" wasn't the real Anita Lee. It was his wife who was paid off to be a stand in for the Witch. But who could be behind all of this? One man. Mayor Bisogni.
Nightwing has a chance to put a stop to this as the crescendo is slowly beginning to build for this story.
Final Thoughts:
Talk about INTENSE.
Seeing the build up to Nightwing's decision has a tremendous amount of intensity. The pacing in this book was genuinely phenomenal and was planned so well. The expressions on Nightwing's face throughout this book told a phenomenal story on its own. A artistically sound book can tell a story with no words and this book does that.
Lastly, the middle ground of mystical villains and grounded crime lord bosses is blended well in this issue. Its why comics media is so great. It combines 2 very different types of villains for Nightwing and bringing them together in a way that's actually pretty realistic. Super excited to see how this all unfolds.
