Have no clue how we got here? No worries, check out my review of Dungeons of Doom #1 HERE!
After Hydra, the US Military, Umbra and Latverian Freedom Fighters all fell into different parts of Doom's massive dungeon, what mysteries do all these parties find along their journey? Let's find out!
*DUNGEONS OF DOOM #2 SPOILER ALERT!*
THE MILITARY
Red Hulk saunters around his portion of the dungeon that he fell into last issue. His men are still with the mutant in the room with his body and mouth stitched shut. They hear a whispering from the device in his chest when they are sent back by the sounds of this half hanging body actually moving in pain. This thing is actually alive. One of the sergeants named Sergeant Major cuts it's mouth open as it begins talking in some obscure language.
Before the team can get back, the mutant explodes, absorbing into the body of Sergeant Major and visions flash into his mind. The team begins to leave with the piece from this mutant as they begin their journey through the dungeons, staying alert for Hydra soldiers.
Sergeant Majors begins having mystical smoke coming from his mouth, causing his voice to change as well. While all this is happening, a dying Latverian soldier lays in the rubble, pulling his gun up and blasting some of the US soldiers away, and Red Hulk hears it all.
Sergeant Majors lunges at the Lateverian and crushes his head in his bare hands in brutal fashion. A soldier on Majors' squad tries to ask him what's wrong but he cracks him in the face with a punch before raising into the air in a flash of blue light before exploding in a gory fashion.
THE WAKANDAN, UMBRA
Umbra looks down a large put in his portion of the dungeon. After sending out a sonic blast from the suit, he jumps down and meets a door with a panther on it. After attaching a bomb to the door and blasting it away, he approaches the podium.
This podium stands in a room of many trinkets and items. But he only has eyes for this singular item. Its an herb that not only allows a person to travel to the ancestral plane, but allows them to bring back the dead. Including his wife that has died. He eats the herb causing a purple surge to go through his body and come out of his eyes. The door to the ancestral plane has opened.
HYDRA
The messiest team of all the groups down here goes to Hydra. They are still bickering and arguing about who should hold the Hammer that they found. Valence tells his team that this Hammer that he's wielding is named Sviksemi, and he knows that because it speaks to him.
The soldier that was too weak to pick up the hammer before Valence argues that the hammer is his because he found it/ Valence tells him for the last time that the hammer is HIS before marching forward, looking for soldiers to kill. But before he can get too far, he's shot in the face by Latverian soldiers, leaving his hammer for the taking.
Valence isn't completely dead, the soldier struggles to pick up the hammer while he smiles at him, mocking him. The soldier picks up the hammer and crushes Valence's skull completely. The hammer finally speaks to him as he's able to finally lift it.
THE LATVERIAN FREEDOM FIGHTERS
Aleksander follows his family member Katyrena in the water with his freedom fighters. They approach an entrance that she guides them too which brings them to safety. And not just safety, but a room that contains these large structures. Water falls around them as one of the soldiers lays on the ground in pain. He has a disease flowing through his veins. Katyrena speaks to Aleksander telling him that he has to kill him. If he doesn't then he'll kill the entire team.
Over to the Freedom Fighters, Sofia and Fedir stumble across the Eye of Khonshu, she pulls it from the statues hands and can see everything Fedir has done in his life. All his secrets and all his sins in the past. She consoles him saying he doesn't have to hide anything from her before Aleksander shows up.
They question him about the soldier who we learn is named Borys that was laying diseased on the ground. They ask if Aleksander killed him and they aren't happy about that possibility.
Katyrena whispers to Aleksander that he has to kill them as well before they kill him. Fedir and Aleksander pull out the guns on each other before Sofia steps in to break it up, because they have more important matters to deal with. A diseased Borys watches from the shadows nearby.
CONCLUSION
Another great read! The suspense continues to build as all these parties are slowly inching closer to each other for the eventual blowout.
This issue really honed in on the horror aspects of this story. The mutant hanging from the ceiling all the way to the diseased Latverian soldier at the end. All of it was straight out of a nightmare.
This story has been an example of great art direction mixed with an interesting story that tells you just enough to get through the issue. All without over-explaining things to you. You actually want to come back next month as a reader to see how much further into the dungeon these characters have gone and what treasures they find in Doom's Dungeon. I'll say it again, this is a book that has made itself hard to ignore and is a great read for anyone. Even if you've read very little about Doom in the past like me, it's still worth dropping your hard earned money on.
