Batman #14 (Home Invasion)

Writer: Matt Fraction
Penciler: Matteo Scalera
Colorist: Tomeu Morey
Publisher: DC Comics

The Bad Seeds crossover has Gotham looking like a total prehistoric jungle right now, with Poison Ivy letting loose ancient plant life that is straight-up eating buildings and burying the city in green. But instead of just throwing Batman into another endless brawl against giant vines, Batman #14 pumps the brakes just a bit to give us a fun, character-focused check-in. Matt Fraction splits the action across two tracks: Bruce heading into the freezing dark to track down an old rogue, and Pennyworth Manor turning into an absolute battleground thanks to some crooked cops looking to score big.

A Chip off the Pennyworth Block

Trying to step in for Alfred is a thankless gig. Alfred was Bruce's rock, his moral compass, and the voice in his ear constantly keeping him from running off the rails. So when his niece, Verity, popped up as the new major-domo, it made sense for readers to side-eye the move. Luckily, Fraction uses this issue to show she has real juice.

Verity gives Bruce just the right amount of witty pushback without coming off like an annoying distraction. She is sharp, stays cool under pressure, and manages the comms while Bruce is off subterranean spelunking. Their back-and-forth feels completely natural, building an early rapport that honors Alfred's presence while letting Verity carve out her own distinct lane.

Batman’s Cold Call

With Ivy’s Superbloom running rampant, Batman knows his usual arsenal is useless against ancient root systems. He needs subzero tech, leading him deep underground to Mister Freeze’s frostbitten sanctuary. While digging into the tunnels, Bruce catches Verity up on Victor's tragic, chaotic history: curing his wife Nora with Lex Luthor's serum, only for her to become "Mrs. Freeze," turn on him, and leave him behind.

The twist here is that Bruce actually finds the pair together, with Nora tending to an injured Victor. After a quick shootout where Nora blasts Bruce with her freeze ray, Batman handles business, patches Victor up, and lays his cards on the table. His pitch to get them on board is wild: help him wipe out Ivy’s runaway garden, and he will let them freeze all of Gotham. It is a completely unhinged bargain that shows just how desperate the Dark Knight is getting.

Manor Alone

Down below is all business, but the real highlight of the issue happens back at Pennyworth Manor. A crew of corrupt GCPD officers rocking Batman masks, doing dirty work for Vandal Savage, decide to break in and raid the place during the citywide blackout.

What follows is an absolute blast, landing right between Home Alone and John Wick. Dainty appearance aside, Verity proves she is not the one to mess with. She turns the manor into a tactical death trap, outmaneuvering the intruders before putting them down with ruthless hand-to-hand combat. There is definitely plenty of mystery left regarding where her loyalties stand, but she is effortlessly charming here while handing out an all-pro beatdown.

An Arctic Art Alliance

Matteo Scalera’s jagged line art and Tomeu Morey’s colors do heavy lifting across both storylines. The team crushes the contrast between the chaos inside the manor and the chilly subterranean atmosphere below. Scalera makes Verity's close-quarters brawls pop with brutal kinetic flow, while Morey's icy blues and teals underground balance the warm wood tones of the mansion.

Fraction serves up a smooth, well-paced issue that lets character dynamic take center stage while setting the board for the next phase of Bad Seeds. Between Bruce’s wild bargain with the Freezes and Verity officially proving she is built for this life, this one keeps the momentum rolling heading into the back half of the crossover.

Verdict and Conclusion

Fraction delivers a clean, well-paced transition issue that knows exactly when to lean on banter and when to push the plot forward. While Bad Seeds continues to tear up Gotham in the background, anchoring Batman #14 around Verity's trial by fire and Bruce's increasingly reckless gambits gives the broader crossover some much-needed breathing room. It is fun, punchy, and does the heavy lifting of building long-term character equity while setting up what promises to be a wild, frostbitten third act.

Verdict: 7/10

A fun, breezy crossover chapter that turns Pennyworth Manor into an action movie while testing just how far Batman will go to freeze out Poison Ivy.
