AEW Continental Challenge Cup Semifinals Confirmed

The field for the AEW Continental Cup has thinned down to four, and the semifinals, which will take place on next week’s edition of Dynamite, have been confirmed.

First, it’s Death Rider vs Death Rider as defending Continental Champion Jon Moxley takes on fellow stablemate Claudio Castagnoli. This represents a rematch from the 2025 Continental Classic, a match that Castagnoli won. Moxley will look to avenge that loss against arguably the strongest member of the Death Riders stable and book his place in the final. For Moxley, this is the second consecutive match where he’ll look to avenge a loss, having already finally defeated Jay White in the quarters. Moxley is looking to run the gauntlet to retain the Continental Championship. Claudio will have to defeat two consecutive Death Rider partners if he wants an opportunity to take the championship, as he defeated Daniel Garcia to get here. Garcia had replaced Eddie Kingston.

Meanwhile, it’s a battle of the technicals, as the Conglomeration’s Kyle O’Reilly takes on part-timer Nigel McGuinness.

KOR had to beat out his fellow stablemates Orange Cassidy and Roderick Strong in the last two rounds to make it to the semis. For McGuinness, despite dealing with an injury he suffered in his first-round match against Katsuyori Shibata, the Englishman has persevered through the pain and is one step closer to gaining homefield advantage in a Wembley Stadium championship match.

AEW Confirms Next Round in Continental Cup

After eight grueling and exhilarating first-round matches, eight wrestlers remain in the inaugural AEW Continental Challenge Cup. And today, AEW President and CEO Tony Khan announced the matchups for the random draw on the AEW Continental Challenge Selection Special on YouTube. The four matches are set to take place on this week’s editions of Wednesday Night Dynamite and Saturday Night Collision.

On Dynamite, Continental Champion Jon Moxley will breathe with the Switchblade as Jay White looks to end Moxley’s defense prematurely. This will be their third one-on-one meeting, following the 2019 G1 Climax and 2023 Continental Classic, as Moxley looks to avenge his 0-2 record with his championship reign on the line.

Meanwhile, part-time wrestler and AEW color analyst Nigel McGuinness dukes it out with the CMLL World Heavyweight Champion, Hechicero. There had been speculation that McGuinness would exit the tournament due to an injury sustained in his first-round match against Katsuyori Shibata. Nigel, who has lost a significant portion of his career to injury, announced on the Selection Special that he’s staying in the tournament. He will not let another injury take him away from his opportunity.

“A different man, a smarter man, a prudent man, might say ‘Now is the time to bow out. No way you’re gonna be 100%,” McGuinnes said. “Clearly, I’m not that man.”

On Collision, long-time partners meet once more, as Eddie Kingston will face off against Claudio Castagnoli. The Mad King and The Swiss Superman are no strangers to each other, with a deep and personal history that has spanned 15+ years starting in the independent circuit.

And finally, it’s Conglomeration vs Conglomeration, as Kyle O’Reilly takes on stablemate Orange Cassidy. This will be the second time in a row O’Reilly faces off against a member of the Conglomeration in this tournament, as he defeated fellow member Roderick Strong on last week’s Collision to advance.

The finals will be held at All In on Aug. 30, where the winner will win the cup and become the AEW Continental Champion.
