This week on the Major Issues Podcast, the hosts revisit Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely ahead of Supergirl’s big-screen debut. Widely regarded as the defining Supergirl story of the modern era, the series follows Kara Zor-El, Krypto, and the young warrior Ruthye on a cosmic quest for justice that challenges everything Kara believes about vengeance, heroism, and hope.
The hosts break down the book’s True Grit-inspired space western structure, Ruthye’s role as narrator, the haunting journey to track down Krem, and why this story succeeds as a Supergirl story rather than simply a Superman story with a different lead. They also explore the stunning artwork, the emotional weight of Kara’s past, and the themes of trauma, legacy, and choosing compassion in a universe that rarely rewards it. With the upcoming Supergirl drawing heavily from this acclaimed miniseries, the hosts discuss what makes Woman of Tomorrow so beloved, how it reshaped perceptions of Supergirl, and why it remains essential reading for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
